Dedication

Hurricane Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast, August 29, 2005. Two days prior, all animals housed at the Louisiana SPCA had been evacuated to ‘safe zone,’ an area outside our city’s levee system and out of the path of the storm. The animals were taken to the Houston SPCA. The routine evacuation, executed when a category 3 or above was headed our way, saved the lives of hundreds.

It wasn’t until Hurricane Katrina hit that the dedication of the Louisiana SPCA staff and volunteers was truly tested. Faced with personal loss, set aside due to the urgent needs of the areas’ animals, a shelter was established at Lamar-Dixon, in Gonzales, Louisiana, and a plan of action was initiated. Many organizations and individuals came to our aid, helping in the overwhelming task of saving lives. Thousands of animals were at risk of starvation, dehydration, disease and drowning.

We are deeply grateful for the incredible support received by people from around the country.
